Schloss Thürmsdorf

Thürmsdorf lies on the heights above the Elbe between Königstein and Weißig, right on the Malerweg. The estate was mentioned in 1420 as “Vorwerk Termestorff” and from 1606 was a manor in its own right. The Schloss got its present appearance during a rebuilding in 1899/1900. From 1908 to 1931 it belonged to Baron Erich von Biedermann. Today it is privately owned and has been restored since 1997; the interior cannot be visited, but the park is open.

The palace park

The 3.5-hectare park was laid out by the garden architect Max Bertram between 1908 and 1912 for the von Biedermann family – with a pond, a rose garden and valuable old trees. In the park stands the bronze figure “Adoration” by Stephan Sinding, and there is a sundial on the façade. From the field path behind the palace you have a clear view of the Festung Königstein.

The Malerweg chapel

On the eastern edge of the estate, on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Festung Königstein, Helene Baroness von Biedermann had a mausoleum built in 1920/21 – a round, domed building of sandstone and brick. After it was looted in the 1970s, those buried there were reinterred in the cemetery at Königstein. In 1994/95 the building was rescued, and in June 2016 it was consecrated as the ecumenical Malerweg chapel. Right next to it lies the Thiele viewpoint, with a view down the Elbe valley as far as Bohemian Switzerland.

Chocolate in the palace vaults

In a vaulted cellar beneath the palace, ADORATIO Schokoladenkunst makes chocolate – by its own account the first certified organic chocolate manufactory in Saxony. It also has a chocolate café. For groups of six or more there are tasting tours “from cocoa bean to chocolate”, by prior booking.

Links to other places

From Thürmsdorf you look across to the Festung Königstein, which Johann Alexander Thiele painted from the viewpoint next to the Malerweg chapel. Heading west along the Malerweg it is just a few kilometres to Weißig, from where Stage 8 leads past the Robert-Sterl-Haus to Pirna. And right by Thürmsdorf you will also find the Bärensteine.
