Langenhennersdorf – legends

Legend The Querxe at the waterfall

According to legend, the Querxe – small, good-natured dwarfs – lived at the Langenhennersdorf waterfall and in the Spitzberg near Cotta; an underground passage is said to lead from the waterfall to the church. Because a girl betrayed their secret in confession, they had to move away: one misty November morning countless tiny feet pattered through the valley to Pirna, and the ferryman carried load after load across the Elbe without seeing anyone. As payment he found so many pennies in his boat that he had to measure them by the bushel. A few Querxe stayed behind and guard a brewing pan full of gold in the Spitzberg – and when one day they return, mining in Berggießhübel is supposed to flourish once more.

Legend The cave in the Cotta Spitzberg

The cave of the Querxe in the Cotta Spitzberg is said to open only once a year. A woman who was resting there one hot midday forgot her bonnet on a stone bench – when she came back, the mountain was closed. Exactly one year later the cave stood open again, and the bonnet was still lying in its place. For another woman, the dwarfs looked after her child while she was mowing grass and gave her a bread roll, which turned into gold when she got home.
