Treaty of Eger (1459)
On 25 April 1459, in Eger (Cheb), the Bohemian King George of Poděbrady and the Saxon princes fixed the border between Bohemia and Saxony: along the ridge of the Ore Mountains and down the middle of the Elbe. This border still applies for the most part today – one of the oldest borders in Europe still in existence; it also runs right behind the Bielatal.
Weddings and castles
The treaty was sealed with two weddings: Poděbrady's daughter Sidonie married Albert the Bold – celebrated in 1464 at Burg Tharandt – and his son Henry married Catherine, the daughter of Duke William. Königstein, Hohnstein, Wildenstein and Rathen were already in Saxon hands by then and stayed that way; Tetschen, Schreckenstein, Schauenstein and Tollenstein remained Bohemian.
