Felsenburg Šaunštejn – history

Šaunštejn (Schauenstein) is a rock castle in Bohemian Switzerland, about 800 metres north of Vysoká Lípa (Hohenleipa); it can only be reached on foot. It protected the Old Bohemian Road between Bohemia and Lusatia. At the top there are rooms hewn into the rock, a cistern and a sweeping view – especially of the Růžovský vrch, the Rosenberg.

History

It was built by the Berka of Dubá – in the 13th or at the end of the 14th century; the sources disagree – and it is first mentioned in 1431. After that it passed to the Wartenbergs, who launched raids from here. For this reason the Saxon Wettins and the Upper Lusatian League of Six Towns besieged it several times; by the beginning of the 16th century it had been abandoned.
