Von Schmilka auf den Großen Winterberg – hike
You start in the half-timbered village of Schmilka, right on the Elbe, and walk past the Schmilk'sche Mühle from 1665, which has been grinding grain again since 2007. You climb steadily through the Ilmenbachtal, pass the Katzenstein and, after about five hundred metres of ascent, reach the summit of the Großer Winterberg, at 556 metres the second-highest elevation in Saxon Switzerland. At the top there are a lookout tower and a national park information point; the view stretches over the Schrammsteine, the Affensteine and far into Bohemia. The way back follows sections of the Malerweg down into the Elbe valley again. The path is well built throughout, but has almost no flat stretches.
Tip: There is no reliable place to stop for refreshments at the summit, so please take drinks with you. The tour runs through the national park, partly right along the national border: stay on the marked paths in the core zone, dogs must be kept on a lead, and the Boofen closed season runs from 1 February to 15 June.
