Fremdenweg vom Kuhstall zum Großen Winterberg – hike
This one-way hike follows the historic Fremdenweg, where Caspar David Friedrich himself walked in 1808 and 1818. From the Kirnitzschtal you climb up to the rock gate Kuhstall and go through the Himmelsleiter up onto the plateau of the Neuer Wildenstein. The path then continues over the Kleiner Winterberg with a view of the Hinteres Raubschloss, and on to the summit of the Großer Winterberg at 556 metres. The long descent ends at the Elbe in Schmilka. Around sixty per cent of the route is narrow paths, so progress is correspondingly slow.
Tip: Please plan your return journey by train or bus in advance, as the start and finish are far apart. The route runs through the core zone of the national park: stay on the marked paths, dogs must be kept on a lead, and bivouacking (Boofen) is prohibited from 1 February to 15 June.
