Brandaussicht und Polenztal ab Hohnstein – hike
From the car park on the Brandstraße, a wide forest track takes you to the Brandaussicht, regarded as the balcony of Saxon Switzerland, with far-reaching views over the Elbe Sandstone Mountains. From there, the route descends via the Brandstufen, a zigzagging staircase, into the Tiefer Grund. You then follow the stream to Porschdorf before crossing into the rock-lined Polenztal, which accompanies you as far as the Waltersdorfer Mühle. The way back to Hohnstein leads through a rocky gorge and along the Neuweg. The surface ranges from firm forest tracks and long flights of steps to narrow, damp valley paths.
Tip: Sturdy footwear is important on the Brandstufen. Part of the circuit lies within the national park, where the path rules apply.
