Dresdner Zwinger – history
The Zwinger is a Baroque festival complex in the centre of Dresden; its name comes from the area between the outer and inner fortress walls. From 1711 Augustus the Strong had it built by Pöppelmann and the sculptor Permoser, and it was ready as a festival ground in time for his son's wedding in 1719. Today it houses the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery) and the Porcelain Collection; after its destruction in 1945, reconstruction was completed in 1963.
