Dresdner Residenzschloss – history

The Residenzschloss, the Royal Palace in Dresden's old town, was for centuries the seat of the Saxon electors and kings. Today the Dresden State Art Collections display, among other things, the Grünes Gewölbe – the Green Vault, Augustus the Strong's treasure chamber.

Destruction and reconstruction

The castle is first mentioned in 1289, and under Elector Maurice a Renaissance palace was built from 1548. In the air raid of 13 February 1945 it burned down to its foundations; it has been under reconstruction since 1986. On 28 September 2019, exactly 300 years after their first inauguration, the state apartments of Augustus the Strong reopened. In 2019 burglars stole jewels from the Green Vault; a large part of them was recovered in 2022.
